Keep the referrer in the conversation when you contact their friend

What this page is for. Somebody has just named a friend. Use this page for what happens next, because what you do with that name decides whether you got a referral or only a phone number. Done this way, the person who gave you the name stays in the conversation instead of handing you off and stepping away.

SOP-16-Keep-the-referrer-in-the-conversation-when-you-contact-their-friend.md

1. Why a name on its own is nearly worthless

Take the name, leave the room, and message the friend yourself, and look at what you have actually done: you have sent a private first message to somebody who does not know you and never gave you permission to contact them. That is cold outreach. The referral bought you a talking point and nothing else.

Do it the other way and the response rate is significantly higher than anything you would get by messaging that name yourself. The difference is not the wording of your message. It is who the friend thinks is watching.

2. The method, in person

In order, without pausing between them:

  • Ask for the friend's name — who were you thinking of?
  • Then get their phone out, or ask them to.
  • Then pull the friend up in their messages.
  • Then put yourself in the thread, so it is a group of three.
  • Then take a photograph of you together, right then.
  • Then send it.

What exists at the end of that is a three-way thread containing a picture of your customer standing next to you. It is not a claim that they vouch for you; it is a picture of them vouching for you, sent from their own phone, which is considerably harder to argue with.

Trust transfers partially to you at that moment, and partially is the honest word for it. You have not inherited the friendship. You have inherited enough of it to get a reply.

3. What happens next, and why it holds

Now you send your message into that group. Three things follow, in this order, and it is worth knowing them in advance so you do not misread the silences:

The friend is far more likely to answer than they would have been, because their friend can see whether they answer. Ghosting a stranger is free. Ghosting a stranger in front of somebody you know is not.

They will probably message their friend privately to ask whether you are legitimate. This is the step people find unnerving and it is actually the one doing the work — it is a reference check you did not have to ask for.

Their friend says you are fine, and then they reply to you. By the time the conversation starts you already have trust you did not have to build, and you have it before you have said anything about what you sell.

4. When you cannot do it in person

If you cannot do it face to face, get the three-way introduction anyway — at least in a messenger, a direct message or a group chat, whatever feature the platform gives you. It is weaker than the photograph and it is still far better than you cold-messaging the name.

The ranking, best to worst:

How the introduction happens What the new person sees
In person, three-way thread with a photo of you together Their friend, with you, right now
Three-way group message or chat, no photo Their friend putting the two of you together
You message the name yourself A stranger who somehow knows their name

5. The rule underneath all of it

Make it easy for the friend to make the introduction. That is the whole method compressed, and every variation above is a way of obeying it.

6. When to ask

Ask after you have delivered something, not before. A referral is one of the returns on work you have already done, which is why the free or discounted work at the start is worth doing properly — you are not only getting reps, you are building the thing that produces names.

Flag: when to ask. That is one reading: ask once the work has delivered. A second reading asks at the moment of purchase, without waiting: ask for the names of friends who might join them, right on the contract or the checkout page, and ask for the three-way introduction there and then. This page does not settle which reading is right.

Under either reading, once someone is a customer, ask who they know rather than whether they know anyone.

A customer you never charged makes you money three ways:

  1. They convert and start paying you.
  2. They send paying customers through referrals.
  3. Their testimonials bring in paying customers who never meet them.

All three are real and all three are delayed, which is the only difficult thing about them. It might not feel like it at the time, but the return on the activity is high; it simply does not arrive in the week you do the work.

7. What this page does not cover

The conversation that produces the name in the first place is on SOP 19, and the reply pattern that gets you there is on SOP 14. Pricing the work you do for the person who was introduced, and the point at which you stop working free, are on SOP 18.

Giving customers more value so that they refer, and asking for referrals the way you would make an offer, are on SOP 284 — Earn more referrals by giving more value.

Affiliate arrangements, commission on referrals, and formal partner programs are not covered on this page.

Three-way introduction
Turning a named friend into a real referral: while you are together, the customer starts a three-way message thread from their own phone, ideally with a photo of the two of you. The person who gave the name stays in the conversation rather than handing you off.
